Timber framing begins in the forest, and we're lucky in Maine to be surrounded by it. We take pride in the relationships built over many years with woodcutters, sawyers, log yards and mills which allow us to source high quality timber and logs. One of the joys of this work is walking woods roads and field edges hunting for a particularly shaped tree.
Our LT40 woodmizer sawmill is an essential part of our operation. It allows us to mill our own timber from locally sourced logs, some of which come from the extensive forest on our own and neighboring acreage here in freedom.
It also allows us to mill custom timbers such as crucks (naturally curved timbers) and traditional gunstock posts for special projects. And it allows us to maintain an inventory of air-dried hardwood for knee braces that get re-milled after drying for a perfect fit that won't shrink and gap.
Joinery is laid out and cut using a combination of square rule and scribe rule in our solar-powered shop. Wherever possible, walls are preassembled in the shop to minimize site time.
