Haystack Joinery is a design-build studio in midcoast Maine dedicated to creating living spaces through thoughtful design, elevated handcraft, and materials that reflect our deep reverence for nature. Timber framing has been at the heart of our studio since 2008. Alongside the timber work, our design-build team offers architectural services, project management, and frame to finish construction. We strive to create spaces that fulfill our human need for shelter from the elements, but which also answer our longing for beauty, coherence and inspiration.

Timber Frame

To those who believe that beauty follows function, timber framing represents structure at its best. Timbers are joined together using time-tested mortise and tenon joinery and hardwood pegs, with no need for ornamentation. Like a fine piece of furniture, our timber frames are designed with structural integrity and aesthetic grace given equal measures of care and attention.

Build

Timber frames are fabricated in our shop in Freedom, Maine and can be delivered almost anywhere and assembled quickly on site. For local projects we additionally offer frame to finish general contracting. For projects where distance makes site work prohibitive, we can support a successful build with project planning and management.

 Sauna

Saunas are an essential way for us to relax, spend time together, and reconnect with ourselves. We build saunas using stacked logs as people in northern lands have for countless generations. As the sauna goes through its cycle of heat and steam, the logs regulate both to provide a healthy atmosphere for a perfect sweat.

 Restoration

If you’ve spent any time in rural new england, you’re familiar with the ubiquitous listing barns and sagging farmhouse rooflines. Many of these architectural gems are two hundred or more years old, but are in danger of passing into oblivion without intervention. We can provide an initial assessment of existing conditions and help to restore them to soundness in preparation for the next 200 years.
